This is the Wigley building
sometime before the 1870's. It was first constructed as the Racine
City Mill in 1849. By 1857, it had outgrown its quarters, and a
five-story addition was built connected to the north side of the
building. Notice the absence of the two windows now at the peak, and
even more noticeably, the absence of the loading dock on the fourth floor where the main
entrance is now located. Street level in this picture is on the third
floor. A carriage is parked in the street, while the Case Company is
across the river. The south elevator has also not yet been built
(elevators being invented later). At this time, the building is
powered by kerosene and a steam engine. The 150-year-old boiler still
remains today on the first floor. The steam engine was melted down to
sustain war efforts.
